In the modern construction industry, the use of concrete is increasing day by day. Concrete use to construct different types of elements in building construction, road construction, marine construction, etc. These different elements need different types of concrete mixes. Some need highly strengthen concrete when others only need mass concrete with low strength.
Strength and Durability of the concrete vary to each mix type of concrete. Due to this, proper categorization required to choose a suitable concrete mix for the required strength. Therefore concrete categorized into several categories knows as “concrete grades” by considering their compressive strengths.
Grades of concrete
In this classification of the concrete, letter M stands for mix design, and the Number stands for compressive strength (N/mm2) of each concrete grade. This compressive strength measured by crushing concrete test specimens after 28 days curing period. The standard test specimen is a 15cm cubic shape. The test knows as the Compressive strength test. Usually, three samples should be taken from the specified mix to test the compressive test. But some times it will only be two samples. Sample no 01 will crush after 14days curing period, and sample no 02 will crush after 28 days curing period. Then why is there another sample? Good question. Sometimes both of the initial samples that have crushed can be failed to achieve nominated strength. In this case, the consultant might wish to test a new sample after 60 days. Because some concrete will gain its specified strength delayed than the standard strength curve.
these concrete mixes are using to form a uniform surface for foundation concrete, and these are using to prevent direct contact between soil and foundation concrete.
this concrete mix is generally using to provide leveling surface bellow concrete footings, Strip foundations and other concrete elements that contact with the ground
this concrete mixed type is using to construct curbs for road pavement and floor bindings.
this concrete mixed type is using as RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete), and generally, it’s using to construct columns, beams, slabs footings, etc. (for mild exposure)
M25 / M30
this mix is also applying to build columns, footings, beams, slabs, and even elements that are contacting water bodies such as swimming pools, ponds, plunge pools, etc. Clear cover for the reinforcement should adequately keep as per the instruction of the structural engineer.
The M40 concrete mix using to construct prestressed concrete elements, Pressurized concrete gliders, Pressurized concrete beams, etc.
this mixed type is using to construct runways, concrete roads, pressurized beams, etc.
High strength concrete
M60 / M80
these types of concrete grades are using to construct elements that need high compressive strength. Such as concrete members of high rise buildings, long-span beams, and bridges. And also, these mix types can be used to construct elements that are under aggressive environmental conditions such as coastal constructions, dams, etc.
However, when using specified concrete grades to construct different kinds of elements or members, the general guidelines for concrete should be always followed.
