Brickwork is a masonry work that Bricks are laying into a patterned and bonding with mortar. There are various types of structures built by using brickwork. Mainly brickworks are using to construct walls, architectural columns, paving, etc. When building walls using bricks, there are several types of bricklaying patterns that are commonly in use. These patterns called Bonds.
Bonds are not only using for walls but also for brick pavings, concrete block pavings, and other kinds of masonry structures. Either it is a load-bearing wall or a separation wall, the element should construct by using a bond type to ensure it’s stability and proper load distribution while achieving maximum strength.
When it comes to brick walls, rows of the bricklayers call as courses. There are several brick bond types commonly use. The following bonds are the most popular types.
This bond is very easy to construct. It only uses one bricks layer for a course. The bond is composed of stretchers offset by half brick in each course. Commonly use in separation walls. Also, use in cavity walls reinforced with metal ties to the main structure.
This bond is another variation of the running bond—this bond composed of running bond patterns with intermittent courses of header bricks. The bond is often using for double brick walls.
The English bond has stretcher courses and header courses alternatively. Usually uses in load-bearing walls. The bond is similar to the common bond and considering as the strongest bond among all bonds.
In this bond, stretcher bricks and header bricks are alternating in each course.
This bond only uses stretcher bricks. All the stretcher bricks are laying in grids to align their bonding joints horizontally and vertically. The bond is considering as a non-structural bond.
This bond is the exact opposite of the stretcher bond. Also known as heading bond and only composed with header bricks in each course. In the bond, overlap kept as equal to half-width of a brick. Three-quarter brickbats are using in alternate courses to maintain the proper overlap throughout the bond.
